Standard cover

By default, standard journal covers are used for all our eBooks. If your journal is cross-listed, then we will use the standard cover of the cross-listed journal that has the most articles.

Cover by our Design team

However our Design team can suggest a custom cover based on keywords or specific suggestions (landscape, object, etc). They search an image database and select the best image for the topic and that fits our cover template.

Propose your own cover

Or you can propose your own cover. The image must meet our Technical Requirements and needs to be approved by our Design team. Please note that the cover template colors will remain the same even if you provide a custom image.

Image requirements for submitted covers 

  • Dimensions:  210 x 275 mm

  • Portrait orientation

  • High resolution (at least 300 dpi)

  • Image copyright allows for reprint

  • Visually interesting

  • Avoid having composite images, diagrams or specific details on your cover (like text or numbers)

Copyright

Please ensure that the image copyright allows for reprint, as Frontiers  will not cover any permission fees charged by others for copyrighted material.

Please note that any image, including third-party graphics and other third-party materials, must be subject to the CC-BY licence, meaning that you must obtain relevant third-party permissions.

If your cover does not meet our requirements, then our Design team will suggest an image based on the keywords. Thank you for taking these guidelines into account.

Good examples of eBook cover images

Abstract image

Abstract images ares easily adaptable, and contain good-looking colors and shapes that are visually interesting.

The image might be detailed, but it allows adding the cover template without losing part of its content.

Specific content

The image might be detailed, but it also has a decorative character: the colors look good on the cover, and the templates do not hide or distort basic details.

Bad examples of eBook cover images

The following examples would not be used for the cover page. Our Design team would have suggested a new image based on the keywords or the standard cover would have been used.

Wrong layout/content

The image may have the correct dimensions and a good resolution, but the cover templates that will be added also need to be taken into consideration, contrary to this example.

Composite image

The provided image might have the correct dimensions, size and resolution, but it contains panels.

As a result, part of the content is lost behind the templates, and the final result looks disorganized.

Diagrams

Even if they have the correct dimensions and resolution, diagrams of any kind will not be used for an eBook cover.

They can only be included in the Introductory pages of the eBook.

All provided images need to have a resolution of at least 300 dpi.
